Piña Colada Protein Shake

With summer over and fall in full effect now, I was craving a taste of the beach life with a piña colada shake. I don’t normally make protein shakes because protein powder always seems to make my shake extra thick which I don’t like. I have also had a hard time finding a plant based powder that isn’t gritty for some reason. I decided that I would just make a green smoothie with other protein packed ingredients like hemp, chia, and flax seed, greens, and Hawaiian Spirulina which you can find here. Recently I was sent a sample of vegan pea protein powder from Green Thumb Foods, and I knew I wanted to try it in a smoothie before making any other recipes with it. A smoothie is the perfect way to test out a protein powder before adding it to in depth recipes.

First thing I noticed with the smoothie is how it didn’t get super thick with the added powder. It was easy to drink and the perfect level of thickness. Secondly, you can’t taste the protein powder at all! I know the powder is there because I made it, but I am not sure I would be able to tell if someone else made it for me. It was easy to drink, delicious tasting, and kept me full until lunch time. The pea protein isn’t avaible yet on their website, but as soon as it is you should snag some. This smoothie is still delish with whatever protein powder you have on hand, or you can just leave it out, it’s still great without it. The bag has 30 servings in it, so it lasts you at least a month if you make a shake a day.

Green Thumb Foods also sent me a sample of their oat milk base, similar to the JOI oat base I use currently. Theirs also comes in a shelf stable bag and can be held for up to a year which is so handy. I made some to eat with a bowl of cereal and it was super creamy and easy to make which I love. This is another great replacement for the traditional cartons of non-dairy milk. My only issue is both bags are not compostable like the JOI oat base bags, but if that doesn’t bother you this is a good choice. The oat bags from JOI are smaller and I do like the larger bag from GTF because I don’t have to buy double the bags when I order. You can head to their website here and buy them off Amazon here.

Let me know in the comments below if you make the smoothie and what you think of it.
